| Customer Reviews: Peter Pan with Mary Martin June 2, 2008 Purplecat219 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This version of Peter Pan is the original ... and the original is the BEST. I have seen and own many other versions; this is still my favorite. I would like to update my collection and get this version on DVD ... when it becomes available and affordable. This movie should be shared and enjoyed for years and generations to come.
The Pan That Defined My Childhood May 7, 2009 Zachary Koenig (Fergus Falls, MN) Ever since the original Peter Pan story was put to paper, the adventures of Peter and Neverland have been chronicled in various different formats (books, movies, TV shows, etc.). This re-telling of the Pan story, set on stage with Mary Martin portraying the rambunctious youngster, has a certain charm that is all its own.
Unlike some Pan stories that may take themselves a bit too seriously, this edition is made for children and it shows in nearly every scene. Both Captain Hook and his merry band of pirates and the Tiger Lilly-led Indians are played for slapstick/silly humor, while Martin's Pan and Wendy are quite whimsical themselves.
Yet, despite the child-oriented humor and content, adults can also enjoy the film for the exact same reasons. Instead of playing like, say, a typical Disney film (where little tidbits are thrown in every once in awhile to keep parents moderately entertained) this production will charm adults on the sole premise of its youthful exuberance.
Perhaps the highlight of the entire Pan experience, though, are the musical numbers (especially those featuring Cyril Ritchard's Hook). The Indian numbers are particularly fun, while "Hook's Tango" is probably the highlight of the entire film.
So, though older children may roll their eyes at the hokey plot/acting/humor, young kiddies will still revel in it again and again!
Peter Pan, with Mary Martin--like I was a kid again! August 26, 2009 Jo Ann Baker (Gardnerville NV) After looking for years, I now know to go to Amazon.com first! The video arrived just as promised, on time, perfect condition, brand new in factory packaging just as promised!! I am so excited to share it with my grand children, a wonderful piece of history!! I did take that leap of faith dealing with a place I had not heard of, but Amanda's was great, and I would be willing to go through the companies Amazon deals with again.
Childhood Favorite October 12, 2009 Alexandra C. Ferris (Mercer county,NJ USA) I was excited when i was able to find one of my favorites movies from when i was a kid. and when i found it on dvd i would have been happy if it wasn't priced at $300 and some odd for a dvd so i bought it brand new in packaging for vhs and yes i'm still excited that i found it. great quality
"Just think of lovely things and your heart will fly on wings..." December 17, 2009 Annie Van Auken (Planet Earth) The GOODTIMES company issued this 30th anniversary edition of Mary Martin's PETER PAN TV broadcast in two speeds, LP and SP. THIS video is the better-quality SP mode tape.
Just for reference, a newer version of their LP speed PETER PAN<--is here.
Both are linear monaural (not HiFi), which is another reason the faster speed is preferable: a slightly improved flutter factor. Since they're dubbed from a 1960 television tape, audio is quite listenable but not up to the high frequency standards of modern CDs or even music LPs. Video quality is acceptable. This one's packaged in an oversized clamshell case.
As of late-December 2009, "Peter Pan" was not available on a current DVD. A discontinued '99 edition is selling in limited quantities for astronomical prices.
Parenthetical number preceding title is a 1 to 10 imdb viewer poll rating.
